Azkoyen Comercial, S.A. has been awarded ISO 14001 certification
for the environmental management system (EMS) implemented
at its coffee roasting plant, which was inaugurated in
February 2000. It was presented by the Regional Minister
for the Environment of the Government of Navarre, Javier
Marcotegui.
The results before tax achieved by the Azkoyen Group
in the first quarter of this year were 644 million pesetas,
with an increase of 12.2% on those recorded in the same
period of last year.
The forthcoming arrival of the euro has influenced
both the sales and profits recorded with the highest
volume on the domestic market.
It is the first coffee roasting plant in Spain to obtain
this certification, which was pointed out by the General
Manager of Azkoyen Comercial, S.A., Blanca Altuzarra,
in her words of thanks and congratulation to all the
staff for their efforts and the environmental culture
that they had demonstrated. From the roasting plant,
built on a 5,000 square metre plot, coffee is distributed
to the domestic market.
The certification, achieved in less than a year, confirms
that the different groups involved in the production
process (suppliers, subcontractors, staff and management)
are participating in better and more efficient use of
resources, and generating and producing the minimum
amount of waste, and achieving the maximum reduction
of atmospheric emissions.
Situated on the Talluntxe industrial estate, near the
Noain airport, the Azkoyen Comercial roasting plant
is one of the most modern in Europe and required an
investment of more than 600 million pesetas. It has
30 silos, with a capacity of more than one hundred tonnes,
two drum roasters and three packaging lines capable
of packaging 20 packets per minute. Ten people work
at the plant.
Azkoyen Comercial, S.A., is one of the three business
units, with autonomy in terms of assets, finance and
management, into which the Azkoyen Group has reorganized
its various industrial and sales companies. It recognises
the importance of the environment in its general activities
and environmental policy is another of the policies
included in its overall strategic policy.
Four computers enable all processes
to be monitored step by step
The roasting plant is focused around roasting and packaging
natural and dark-roasted coffee. The plant does everything
from receiving and storing the raw coffee beans to roasting,
storing, grinding, packaging and shipping them.
The process, which is fully automatic and ensures that
the final product is uniform and consistent, is constantly
monitored from four computers, which follow every step
and the operation of all the silos and machines: from
the unloading and weighing of the raw coffee to the
roasting areas.
The roasting plant and all of its systems ensure that
both the product and the process are completely clean.
The noisy areas have been sealed (compressors, cleaning
machines, etc.) as has the raw materials store in the
production area. Two postcombustion ovens and their
corresponding cyclones ensure that the atmospheric emissions
are clean.
