Talleres Azkoyen
"Talleres Azkoyen" started manufacturing machines for the agricultural sector (asparagus and potato peelers).

It also produced an automatic cradle to rock children to sleep.

The enterprising approach of the founder of Azkoyen made a direct link between products-services-consumers.

It was an intelligent vision of the future that led to the first automatic vending machines: cigarette lighters fuel refills and sweets.

A small machine on the wall, called "SURME", dispensed fuel for cigarette lighters. It worked with 10 / 50 centime and 1 peseta coins.

Azkoyen began the manufacture of coin selectors. Its first model was the "A", wich was assembled on automatic sweet vending machines. It selected 1 or 5 peseta coins

The birth of automatic vending
In the 1960s the range of automatic vending machines was extended. Sales started of matches, packets of cigarettes, biscuits, and chocolate bars, boxes of sweets, and also coin change machines.

Manufacture of the "FOSVEN" machine for the sale of matches. It was created as a complement to the cigarette vending machines. It accepted one or two 1 or 5 peseta coins and did not give change. It included a display window for the matches.

The first cigarette vending machine was launched on the Spanish market, manufactured by Azkoyen: the "POLIMATIC". It had mechanical selectors and was wall-mounted. The most successful model was the "NOVOMATIC", easily identified by its peculiar handles for extracting the products.

The "BABY" machine was launched, aimed at the children's' sweets market. A glass "window" displayed the bubble gum balls it contained. It worked by putting a peseta coin in, then pulling the horizontal lever and the bubble gum came out.

The wall-mounted mechanical "NORIMAT" machine sold biscuits, chocolate bars, sweets, etc., either packed in bags or non-rigid packaging. The products could be seen from the outside.

Azkoyen built its first mechanical change machine. Initially it changed a 5-peseta coin for five of 1 peseta and a 25-peseta coin for five of five. it stayed on the market until 1983 when it was replaced by an electronic model.

The "GOLVEN" model was manufactured, with six (and up to nine) channels for sale of sweets in boxes.

Azkoyen changed its status from a family company to a Limited Company. A group of investors from Navarre became shareholders and the management of the company was made more professional.

Coffee, tea, chocolate bars, snacks, etc. were sold in vending machines made by Azkoyen. Azkoyen technicians developed "The brain" of the machine.

Presentation on the market of the "LIMPIAMAT" shoe-cleaning machine. It had a polish doser and rollers to shine the shoes, and allowed the user to clean his/her own shoes without taking them off.

The first electronic machines -("KARMELE" and "ANNE")- were launched for the sale of cigarette packets. They included pushbuttons so that the user/purchaser/customer could give the order to extract. The BILLETMAT model was installed in the Autobuses de Barcelona company. It issued bus tickets and provided access control to the vehicle. It worked with coins.

A particularly important date for Azkoyen and the growth of the present Group. Azkoyen changed its status from family company to Limited Company. The founder, Luis Troyas, maintained 30% of the shares but 70% were acquired by a group of investors from Navarre, which made the company's management more professional. The process was culminated with the company being quoted on the Stock Exchange in 1988.

Azkoyen, SA's main role was the provision of all kinds of financial, administrative and management services to its subsidiary companies.

Azkoyen developed its first rotating coin pay-out system, model "A" which, as a component in the machine "Tikemat", was used in the Barcelona Underground system.

At the same time Azkoyen developed the "METROMAT" wich was installed in the Underground network for the Metropolitan Railways of Barcelona.

Using similar technologies similar to those of the "Norimat" model, the "SNACK" was marketed, a free-standing machine for the sale of any kind of food product in boxes.

Manufacture of the first hot drinks vending machine, the "CAFEMAT" model. It worked with instant soluble products and supplied coffee, coffee with milk, chocolate bars, stock, tea, tea with milk and milk.

The presentation on the Spanish market of the first electronic machine by Azkoyen, for the sale of snacks. It provided twenty different product selections and sold them at nine different prices.

On the basis of the penetration of wall-mounted machines in the market, Azkoyen presented the new "NOVAMATIC" model that sold cigarette packets at 135 pesetas.

The "AUTOCAF" replaced the "CAFEMAT" range on the Spanish market.

A decade of great activity and outstanding events began, the highlight being the listing of Azkoyen on the Spanish Stock Exchange.

The Group made a decided option for the research and development of new products and gained a strong competitive advantage in its product lines and in the organisation of industrial processes.

Azkoyen manufactured its first cold drinks vending machine. That same year the manufacture of mechanical machines ended in Azkoyen.

The "MINICAF" (190 coffees) and "MAXICAF" (500 services) models complemented the "Autocaf" range by incorporating technical improvements.

The "BOTELMAT" model for the sale of cold drinks in cans and bottles was developed.

Presentation of the "ELECTRONOVA" electronic wall-mounted machine.

The first commercial delegations of the Group were set up in Spain. This was the first step in a new system of distribution and the creation of the company's own sales network.

First cooperation agreement with the Technological Research Centre Ikerlan, to develop a new electronic control system for a range of cigarette vending machines, based on a microprocessor.

Telefónica Española homologated Azkoyen mechanical selectors for its public telephones and we became the leader in the Spanish market, which had been dominated until then by British and German manufacturers.

The great leap forward
A key year in the history of Azkoyen. In collaboration with Ikerlan, its engineering teams developed an R&D project that would be financed by the Government of Navarre. The Group incorporated electronic technology, a milestone in the industrial and economic history of Spain. The Azkoyen Group presented the "T" range of cigarette machines. It also marketed the gaming machines "SILVER-TWO", with "displays", and "SILVER-THREE", with rollers.

New collaboration agreement with Ikerlan for electronic coin selector applications. All the projects developed by Azkoyen Group have been able to call on assistance and cooperation from the Gobierno de Navarra, CAYCIT and CDTI.

electronic selector was patented. It was later installed in all the automatic vending machines made by Azkoyen. It can "read and check" a coin in thousandths of a second. It was then marketed in the telephone and slot machine sectors.

The consumption of pistachio nuts in thousands of hotel and catering establishments encouraged the Azkoyen Group to manufacture a vending machine for nuts and dried fruit.

Constitution of Azkoyen Industrial, S.A. (manufacturer) and Azkoyen Comercial, S.A., a marketing company. They are subsidaries 100% owned by the parent company.

The sale of electronic coin selectors began. The new series would later be applied to gaming machines and public telephones.

In November Sociedad Azkoyen Comercial International was set up under the name of Navinver, S.A. It later changed its name to Azkoyen Comercial Internacional S.A.

On 18 July Azkoyen shares (a total of 1,707,000 nominal shares of 1,000 pesetas each) were listed on the Madrid Stock Exchange.

The Azkoyen Group. was born. The first company to sell Azkoyen products abroad (in Portugal) was set up and Azkoyen Hostelería, S.A. was created for the manufacture of products and refrigerator trays for the hotel and catering sector.

The marketing of the "D" machine for cigarette sales begins. Azkoyen Industry, S.A. obtained ISO 9001 quality certification for alls its automatic vending machines.

Creation of the trading subsidiary Azkoyen U.K. Ltd.

The "NORIA", vending machine for cans, bottles, mini briks and snacks was marketed.

In the second half of the 1990s the Azkoyen Group began the industrial production and sale of coffee in the hotel and catering sector.

Collaboration agreement with the two research centres of the Universidad de Navarra: CEIT, ,of San Sebastian and CIFA , of Pamplona. Among the Research and Development agreements the one for better knowledge of coffee stands out. It enabled the creation of the "Aulas Azkoyen" for research in Ikerlan, University of Navarre (CIFA and CEIT) and Universidad Pública de Navarra

The Azkoyen Group began the industrial production and sale of coffee in the hotel and catering sector

Expansion in overseas markets
The Azkoyen Group strengthened its presence in the Iberian peninsula with the marketing of top-quality coffee, purchased green at source and toasted in four establishments in Madrid and Pamplona. During that financial year the Group sold more than a million kilos of coffee in Spain, exclusively to the hotel and catering sector.

Expansion in overseas markets
The Azkoyen Group is highlighted by the North American magazine Forbes Global as one of the 300 best SMEs in the world. In this list 133 European companies appear, but only 6 from Spain. Forbes Global included Azkoyen among the too 100 companies with low or medium-range stock market capitalisation.

On 6 July the subsidiary Azkoyen Medios of Pago, S.A. was set up, through a division of Azkoyen Industrial, S.A.

Azkoyen presented the new "N" on the market for the automatic sale of cigarettes.

The Azkoyen Group continued to develop new products, even more adapted to the needs of its customers. After adapting its industrial facilities and commercial structure to ensure the level of quality, cost and services required by the market, the Group based the expansion of all its areas on innovation.

The "euro effect" began with the adaptation of of all Azkoyen products to the new European currency.

The main feature of this decade was the new European currency and its economic, industrial (and also social) consequences. In the face of the challenge posed by the euro, the Azkoyen Group has once again shown its flexibility and technological capability to respond.

In February the coffee roasting facility that Azkoyen Traders, S.A. built in Tajonar (near Pamplona Airport) was formally inaugurated. The investment was over 3.7 million euros.

Reorganisation of the nine industrial and commercial companies of the Azkoyen Group into only three. These are structured as business units with autonomy over their assets, finances and management. The three business units are:

Marketing of specialised machinery and consumer products for the hotel and catering and food sectors in Spain and Portugal.
Manufacture and marketing of vending machines and equipment for the hotel and catering sector.
Technological development of selection, coin return and accounting mechanisms and systems.

The Azkoyen Group markets asparagus and red 'piquillo' peppers under the "Costa Fría" brand for the hotel and catering and food sectors in Spain and Portugal. The Azkoyen Group is one of the 50 organisms, companies, technology centres and universities that appear in the publication "Imágenes actuales de la Ciencia y la Tecnología españolas", published by the Ministry of Science and Technology. It covers a number of important cases of innovation in Spain, among them the electronic sector of Azkoyen, for its repercussion on the technological development of mechanisms and the selection, return and accounting systems.

The main strategic lines of the new Strategic Plan 2003-2006 are:

Consolidation and reinforcement of Azkoyen's position in the markets in which it currently operates.
Diversification in markets/products and markets/regions.
Corporative and organisational redesign.
The results obtained during the first half year of 2003, and the continuing implementation of the Strategic Plan will enable a progressive recovery of company's profit margins over the coming years.

With headquarters in Schio (Italy), Coges S.p.a. especialise in the design, manufacture and marketing of mechanisms and payment systems.

Coffetek Ltd. is incorporated into the AZKOYEN Group in March.
Based in Portishead, UK, Coffetek Ltd. specialises in the design, manufacture and sale of vending machines and hot-beverage dispensers.

Primion Technology joins the AZKOYEN Group in September.
With headquarters in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, Primion Technology is specialises in the manufacturing, marketing and implementation of innovative software and hardware systems for access control, presence detection and integrated security systems.

Incorporation of Impulsa Soluciones Tecnológicas into the Azkoyen Group in March.
Azkoyen is consolidating its European leadership in payment systems for the automatic vending market by integrating with Spain's leading company in new technologies for this sector.

Primion Technology
The Azkoyen Group is currently the largest shareholder of Primion Technology, a company which is now quoted on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, holding 86% of the shares.

Coffee machines from Coffetek Ltd awarded in United Kingdom, one in the Innovation category.
Azkoyen Andina opens a manufacturing plant in Pereira –Colombia- in November to supply the American market, becoming the first manufacturer in South America.
After the launching of the Button Barista App, Azkoyen vending machine users can make drinks from freshly ground espresso coffee beans, tea, chocolate, etc. ordering them directly from their mobile phones.

Cashlogy POS 1000, the automatic payment system which replaces the cash management at the point of sale for traditional businesses and small commerce, has the latest technology of coins and notes recycling systems (28 coins per second and different currency). This speed has never been seen before at the point of sale.
Azkoyen was awarded the Best Practice Award in Innovation in April and the Red Dot Design Award for its Button Gourmet in June. This is the first gourmet self-service food concept with important turnover.
